Watching someone battle an addiction is heartbreaking. As they struggle, they are only hurting themselves and the people around them more and more. It’s not acceptable, and someone needs to step in at a certain point. This can be a scary situation, though. You don’t want to upset your loved one if it’s not your place. Here are some signs that it’s definitely time for an intervention.
1. Health Concerns
One of the main reasons people shouldn’t dice too deep into drugs and alcohol is because it is devastating to your body. Just look at all the pictures that show people after a couple of year for abuse. You can see the effects on the outside. Just imagine what it’s doing to the person’s insides. If you don’t take care of your body, you won’t be able to take care of the people around you.
2. Legal Problems
Some people get in trouble because of their addiction. They may end up with multiple DUIs, possession, or, in some extreme cases, theft. These situations will not only result in large fines, but they can even result in jail time. When people start falling into the system, it gets harder and harder to get out of the cycle.
3. Getting Fired
We all need to make a living somehow. Unfortunately, alcohol and drugs can affect a person’s ability to work. After while, even the most understanding bosses will have to put their foot down. If someone ends up getting fired due to their substance abuse issues, they need a wakeup call to prevent it from happening again at their next opportunity.
4. Putting other people in danger
Many times, people don’t see how much their behavior affects the people around them. This can be especially true for people who have children or elderly parents to care for. Driving while intoxicated or putting friends in dangerous situations is not acceptable. The person may not see how serious their actions are until it’s pointed out to them.
5. Previous talks have not worked
An intervention should be a last resort to save someone’s life. Before you start with an intervention, you should try to talk to the person on the side. After a couple of failed attempts, it’s time to recruit the help of friends and family as well as a professional.
When we see someone struggling, you could be saving their life by stepping in. Do your best to talk to them in private, but when that doesn’t work, it’s time to take it to the next level.
